Battles Small and Great

A book entitled Battles Small and Great: The First Twenty Years of the Racial Discrimination Act was published in November 1995 to explain the history, thinking, events and debates that occurred in relation to the enactment of the Racial Discrimination Act. The major themes in the book were addressed by a video of the same name. The ABC produced the video for the Race Discrimination Unit. The International Year for Tolerance Secretariat included both the Battles Small and Great book and video in its Tolerance Kit which was sent to over 3000 secondary schools across Australia. The book and video have been purchased by many organisations as an anti-racism resource.

Face the Facts

In response to the myths and the misinformation about race-related issues that have emerged during the past several years, the Race Discrimination Commissioner produced a booklet entitled Face the Facts: Some Questions and Answers about Immigration, Refugees and Indigenous Affairs. The aim of the booklet is to address common questions about these three critical race-related areas. It aims also to address the many sweeping generalisations and stereotypes being circulated in the public arena which underpin much of the recent increase in racial intolerance. The booklet has been distributed to all secondary schools in Australia through the State and Territory Departments of Education. More information can be found at: www.hreoc.gov.au/

Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) Education Program

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) administers federal legislation in the area of human rights, anti-discrimination, social justice and privacy. This includes complaint-handling, public enquiries, policy development and education and training in relation to racial discrimination. The Commission also liaises internationally with governments and organisations in other countries to ensure Australia is meeting its obligations under human rights international instruments to which it is committed, such as United Nations treaties, conventions and declarations.

HREOC fosters public discussion and undertakes and co-ordinates research and educational programs to promote human rights and eliminate discrimination. HREOC has produced a number of publications in relation to racial discrimination. More information can be found at: www.hreoc.gov.au

Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Information for Teachers

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) is responsible for public awareness and education around human rights discrimination and equal opportunity.

The HREOC website includes an Information for Teachers portal providing curriculum-linked material for teachers on human rights issues, with a new issue each month.

Monthly activities on current human rights issues are published on a monthly basis. The activities work with curriculum and learning outcomes. The first two of these are on the Stolen Generation and Gender Equality in the Workforce.

The portal includes Youth Challenge, an introductory unit to human rights and discrimination that draws on student decision making, communication and literary skills. In 2002, the module was short listed for the Australian Awards for Excellence in Education Publishing. Teachers can also view links to the human rights education resources and subscribe to the human rights education mailing list (electronic) to receive news on developments in this area.

All education materials developed by HREOC for schools are structured towards current teaching and pedagogical trends. More information can be found at: www.humanrights.gov.au/

Teaching Aboriginal Studies

Teaching Aboriginal Studies is a teacher education resource that aims to ensure that every teacher is taught to understand and teach Aboriginal Studies effectively to all students. It includes both pre-service and inservice professional development.

Understanding Racism in Australia

A monograph to assist in understanding the history and nature of racism in Australia, Understanding Racism in Australia was produced as a joint venture between the Race Discrimination Commissioner and the now defunct Bureau of Population and Immigration Research. It was part of a series designed for senior school/university students produced in 1996 and was distributed widely to schools throughout Australia.
